Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met in Ottawa on Tuesday for a high-level signing ceremony.
An official statement released after the meeting noted that it was the first visit to Canada by an Abu Dhabi Crown Prince.
The two leaders reflected on the strong momentum built since the Prime Minister visited the United Arab Emirates last November. They stressed deepening ties and increasing economic cooperation.
During the meeting, the countries signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The pact was negotiated in a record 47 days to strengthen economic ties, expand commercial opportunities, and support long-term prosperity in both nations.
Carney and Sheikh Khaled also welcomed the launch of the Canada-UAE Strategic Partnership. This new initiative establishes a framework for deeper cooperation across trade and investment, energy, innovation, defense and security, and sustainable development.
Canada and the UAE signed several memoranda of understanding to advance the partnership, aiming to strengthen cooperation in energy, defense, and diplomatic learning and development.
The leaders welcomed progress toward the UAE’s historic commitment to invest $70 billion in Canada. This funding includes opportunities to advance major investments in energy, transportation infrastructure, and technology.
Carney and Sheikh Khaled exchanged views on regional and global developments, covering the Middle East, maritime security, and international peace.
The statement noted that both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue, regional stability, freedom of navigation, and effective multilateral cooperation.
The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact to implement the newly signed agreements.
