Syrian Authorities Intercept Hezbollah-Linked Plot on Homs Refinery

Syrian authorities intercepted an attempted security breach targeting the Homs oil refinery on Tuesday, according to the General Intelligence Directorate and the Internal Security Forces. Officials stated the operation disrupted a planned attack orchestrated by a cell allegedly affiliated with Hezbollah.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding specific arrests, the identities of the cell members, or the exact methods planned for the attack.

The Homs facility is one of Syria’s two primary oil refineries, alongside the Baniyas plant. It provides petroleum products for the domestic market, including kerosene, fuel oil, and diesel.

The incident follows a series of assaults on energy infrastructure. On October 15, saboteurs damaged a petroleum products pipeline connecting Baniyas and Homs, resulting in a fuel leak.

A separate explosion struck a gas pipeline in the northeastern province of Hasakah on the same day. That blast triggered a fire and required emergency repair work.

Syrian security forces have previously reported operations against similar networks. In September, authorities announced the arrest of three individuals belonging to an alleged Hezbollah-linked cell accused of preparing rocket attacks in the southern province of Daraa.

Hezbollah rejected those prior accusations. The Lebanese group stated that it maintained no presence inside Syria and took no part in military or security operations there.

The Lebanese movement served as a primary military ally to former Syrian President Bashar Assad during the civil war, prior to the overthrow of his government in December 2024.
