Hundreds Arrested in France After PSG Champions League Win

More than 400 people have been arrested across France following violent clashes that erupted after Paris Saint-Germain‍‍`s victory over Arsenal in the Champions League final. The consecutive European championship triumph for the French club quickly degenerated into widespread civil unrest in the capital and other major urban centers. Thousands of riot police officers were mobilized to contain the compounding disturbances, which severely impacted public transportation networks including bus, train, and rail services across Paris.

Law enforcement officials eventually resorted to firing heavy volleys of tear gas in central avenues to disperse aggressive crowds of revelers. This rapid surge in football violence in France has raised profound structural concerns regarding public safety protocols during major sporting celebrations.

Shortly after the French side secured their trophy following a tense penalty shootout, the celebrated Avenue des Champs-Élysées was swarmed by thousands of fans. The celebratory environment rapidly transformed into deliberate rioting as groups of individuals set off industrial fireworks, lit rows of flares, and ignited electric bicycles in the middle of public thoroughfares. Vandals also targeted local commerce, smashing the glass windows of commercial storefronts and damaging municipal infrastructure.

According to official police accounts published on Sunday morning, at least six civilian vehicles, two local businesses, and a transit bus shelter sustained extensive physical damage during the midnight chaos. Earlier on Saturday, preliminary skirmishes had already occurred near the Parc des Princes stadium, where thousands of supporters had gathered to watch the live match broadcast on giant screens.

The French Interior Ministry confirmed that a total of 416 individuals were taken into custody during the early hours of Sunday, with 280 of those arrests taking place within Paris boundaries. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez strongly condemned the behavior, describing the unrest as absolutely unacceptable while confirming that seven police officers suffered various injuries during the containment operations.

The systemic chaos immediately sparked severe domestic political friction ahead of upcoming legislative sessions. Far-right political leader Marine Le Pen criticized the government’s handling of public order, asserting on social media that only in France does a football victory routinely trigger riots and compel ordinary citizens to lock themselves indoors to escape volatile streets.

This dangerous escalation represents the second consecutive year where major football celebrations in the country have triggered severe rioting. Following PSG‍‍`s European title win in 2025, similar street violence erupted across major metropolitan hubs, ultimately turning fatal and leaving two people dead, including a 17-year-old youth. Despite advanced strategic deployments by municipal authorities aiming to avoid a recurrence of those tragedies, the post-match containment measures struggled to curb the highly localized disruptions.

Meanwhile, the official team victory parade remains scheduled for Sunday afternoon, with the champion players set to tour the Champ-de-Mars adjacent to the Eiffel Tower before attending a formal diplomatic reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.
