Riyadh Metro Ranks Among Top Four Global Transit Projects

The Riyadh Metro project has secured a spot among the top four global transport initiatives. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City oversees the major transit development.

Organisers announced the ranking at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The distinction follows a competitive selection process involving 533 entries from 68 different countries.

Judges evaluated submissions based on scale and advanced technical standards. The network ranks as one of the largest and most modern public transport developments in the world.

Engineers designed the system to reduce carbon emissions and improve urban traffic flow across the Saudi capital, aiming to accommodate rapid population growth and ongoing urban expansion.

During the congress, officials from the Royal Commission for Riyadh City demonstrated how data and emerging technologies integrate into municipal planning.

Delegates viewed the Riyadh City Data Platform alongside digital twin and artificial intelligence applications. The commission presented these tools to illustrate wider efforts in public transport management and traffic optimisation.

Presentations also covered the Green Riyadh initiative and other ongoing urban mega-projects in the capital. The Smart City Expo World Congress functions as a major international forum dedicated to urban innovation.

This year’s event operated under the theme Urban Solutions, Real Impact, bringing together more than 600 global speakers to discuss digital transformation and mobility.

Discussions at the forum also addressed energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, housing, and infrastructure.
