Iran Denies Plans for Direct Negotiations With Washington Officials

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Tuesday that Tehran has no upcoming plans for talks with US officials. He said that reports suggesting otherwise were completely false.

Araghchi confirmed that authorities in Tehran had carefully examined a communication sent by US Vice President JD Vance to senior Iranian security figure Mohsen Rezaei. The matter was still under review by relevant government agencies, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported.

The Wall Street Journal earlier cited US officials to report that Vance had delivered a message to Rezaei on the instructions of President Donald Trump in an effort to restart peace negotiations.

US President Donald Trump rejected that account. He maintained that Vance’s involvement was restricted solely to assisting with the delivery of necessary medical supplies to Iran.

These diplomatic movements coincide with mediation initiatives driven by Qatar and Pakistan. Those efforts aim to restart negotiations between Washington and Tehran, with various accounts indicating movement in indirect discussions held in Doha.

The current mediation focuses on achieving understandings regarding Iran’s nuclear program, existing economic sanctions, and the security of maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Military conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran began on February 28. Tehran responded by striking Israel and American assets across the region prior to a ceasefire agreement that took effect in April.

Washington and Tehran subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on June 18. The execution of that agreement stalled due to disputes over security arrangements within the waterway.
