Egypt Warns US-Iran War Escalation Would Bring Greater Destruction

Egypt has voiced deep apprehension regarding the prospect of a wider conflict between Washington and Tehran. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty warned on Saturday that any new military escalation would prove far more destructive than previous confrontations.

Speaking at the IISS Manama Dialogue security summit in Bahrain, Abdelatty stressed the urgent need to learn from historical mistakes. He described the potential trajectory of an expanding regional conflict in stark terms.

"The second round will be more dangerous, more destructive, and it will lead to nowhere,” he said at the security conference.

Diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region have faced continuous hurdles. An interim agreement reached in June failed to secure a lasting ceasefire in the Iran war. That arrangement also proved insufficient to restore normal commercial shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

As part of ongoing proposals, Tehran has offered to reopen the disrupted waterway within seven days. This move would be contingent on Washington lifting its blockade of Iranian ports.

Meanwhile, mediation efforts involving Qatari officials continue behind the scenes. Qatari mediators returned to Tehran on Friday in a renewed push to broker an agreement between the opposing governments.

Negotiators remain divided over the proper sequencing of diplomatic steps. Disagreements persist over whether nuclear negotiations should take precedence, or if relief from the naval blockade and oil sanctions must come first.
