Niger`s military-led government has contained an armed mutiny in the capital Niamey following hours of heavy gunfire and explosions targeting key strategic installations, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters. The mutiny erupted shortly after midnight on Saturday at Base 101, a major military installation situated within the Diori Hamani International Airport complex. Dissident soldiers detained several comrades before launching coordinated assaults on the state broadcaster, key transport hubs, and the presidential palace. State television confirmed that security forces gradually regained control of the capital, reporting that dozens of mutineers were either killed or arrested during counter-operations.
Decisive action by loyalist forces prevented the mutiny from escalating into a full collapse of government control.
Security analysts reported that the mutinous troops largely comprised frontline personnel deployed from operational sectors including Ouallam, Tera, and Dosso. Ground forces in those southwestern regions have suffered heavy casualties in recurring confrontations with regional armed groups. Defence Minister General Salifou Mody urged the public to remain vigilant and united, while the precise whereabouts of military leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani remained unconfirmed.
Since seizing power in 2023, the ruling military council has severed longstanding security pacts with Western allies and pivoted toward strategic cooperation with Russia. Base 101 houses the command centre for the Alliance of Sahel States, comprising Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, alongside facilities utilized by the Russian-backed Africa Corps paramilitary group. Russian Ambassador Viktor Voropaev told news agencies that Nigerien authorities requested assistance from Africa Corps elements to help neutralize the mutineers.
Regional partners within the Sahel alliance condemned the uprising as a destabilisation plot, while diplomatic envoys from Algeria and Turkiye called for restraint and institutional order. Security forces maintained heightened checkpoints and armored patrols across critical intersections in Niamey, Ummah Kantho confirmed.
