Trump Warns GOP of ‍‍`Death Wish‍‍` Over SAVE America Act Failure

President Donald Trump on Saturday issued a stark warning to Senate Republicans, urging them to prioritize the passage of the SAVE America Act. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump characterized the potential failure of the legislation as an "unrecoverable death wish" for the GOP, predicting that it would lead to the most catastrophic results in the party’s Senate history.

The President’s comments come on the heels of a recent legislative setback. On Thursday, an attempt to attach the SAVE America Act to a reconciliation bill was defeated in a 48-50 vote. Notably, four Republican senators—Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Thom Tillis—joined Democrats in opposing the measure. The act seeks to require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration and mandates a photo ID for voting in federal elections.

Central to Trump’s frustration is the Senate filibuster, the 60-vote threshold required to end debate on most legislation. Trump explicitly called for the Senate to "terminate it now," arguing that the procedural rule is being used by Democrats to stifle Republican priorities. While Senate Majority Leader John Thune has recently indicated a lack of consensus within the caucus to scrap the filibuster, Trump is continuing to push for an aggressive overhaul of Senate norms to advance his agenda.

Critics, including the Brennan Center for Justice, argue that the SAVE America Act could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters who lack ready access to birth certificates or passports. However, Trump and his allies in the Senate, such as Mike Lee, maintain that the bill is essential for ensuring election integrity. The escalating tension between the White House and establishment Senate Republicans highlights a deepening divide over legislative tactics as the midterms approach.
