World Health Organization Reports Heavy Casualties Across Yemen Conflict Zones

The World Health Organization stated that the conflict in Yemen resulted in 1,771 deaths and nearly 8,000 injuries since August. The agency did not specify whether the casualty figures included civilians, military personnel or both.

A total of 94 people were killed and 564 injured between October 26 and 30. These figures represent an average of 132 casualties per day, up from an average of 93 per day during the previous reporting period.

This acceleration shows an increase in human losses. Lahj governorate accounted for the largest share of casualties during the five-day period, recording 309, which made up 47 percent of the total.

Marib recorded the highest number of deaths with 36 fatalities among its 172 casualties. Marib registered 117 casualties on October 30 alone, including 20 deaths, stemming from incidents in Al-Jubah, Harib and the Al-Jawf front.

Military escalation between Yemeni government forces and Houthi rebels resumed in July, particularly in the southwestern provinces of Taiz and Lahj. These renewed clashes ended the relative calm Yemen had experienced since April 2022.

The ongoing fighting has worsened the humanitarian crisis and local suffering. Essential goods in Taiz city became three to five times more expensive due to the conflict.

The agency report also addressed the growing displacement crisis across the country. More than 300,000 people were displaced as of November 1, according to figures from the International Organization for Migration.

More than 43,000 people fled Al-Madaribah wa Al-Arah district in Lahj since early October. Meanwhile, Aden is currently hosting more than 56,000 displaced people.

Yemen has been engulfed in war since Houthi rebels seized the capital Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014. A Saudi-led Arab military coalition intervened in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
