In Islamic theology, supplication or Dua is regarded as the ultimate weapon for a believer to navigate the trials and tribulations of life. It is through these heartfelt appeals that destiny can be altered and divine pleasure is sought. However, a common challenge many face is the onset of frustration when a specific prayer does not seem to yield immediate results. According to Islamic teachings, the primary reason for this feeling of disillusionment is a lack of patience, which is a fundamental requirement for a prayer to be truly effective.
The Quranic discourse provides clear direction on this matter. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah commands believers to seek help through patience and prayer, affirming that His presence is always with those who remain steadfast. This divine proximity is further emphasized in verse 186 of the same chapter, where Allah states He is near and responds to the call of the caller. The spiritual prerequisite for this response is the servant`s unwavering trust and adherence to divine commands, even when the outcome remains hidden from immediate view.
A significant aspect of making Dua is the psychological and spiritual state of the believer. A well-known Hadith Qudsi mentions that Allah treats His servants exactly as they expect Him to. This means that maintaining a positive and certain outlook toward divine mercy is essential. Often, human desires are clouded by a lack of foresight regarding what is truly beneficial in the long run. Islamic scholars suggest that if a specific request is not granted, it is because the timing was not right or the object of desire carried hidden harms known only to the Creator.
Furthermore, prophetic traditions reassure Muslims that no sincere Dua is ever truly wasted. As recorded in Musnad Ahmad, a supplication is answered in one of three ways: the request is granted in this world, an equivalent evil is averted from the person, or the reward is saved for the hereafter. On the Day of Judgment, a believer will be astonished by the rewards assigned to their unanswered prayers. The realization of the immense value of these stored rewards will lead one to wish that none of their worldly prayers had been answered directly.
As the 2026 Hajj season approaches, these spiritual lessons take on a practical significance for the thousands preparing for the pilgrimage. Official reports confirm that 78,500 pilgrims are scheduled to perform Hajj this year, with the first flight departing from Dhaka this Friday night. For these pilgrims and the global community, the essence of the journey lies in understanding that patience and humble petition are not just rituals but a way of life that ensures peace in both worlds. Accepting divine decree with a content heart remains the hallmark of a true believer.
