Morocco Appoints First Female Prime Minister to Lead New Government

King Mohammed VI received members of a newly formed cabinet at the Royal Palace in Rabat, appointing Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s leader, according to state-run Maghreb Arabe Presse.

El Mansouri is the first Moroccan woman to hold the top government post. Her appointment comes after elections held on September 23, where her political faction secured 97 seats to come first.

King Mohammed VI tasked El Mansouri with forming a government on September 29. The process concluded after a second round of consultations that began on September 30.

The newly formed administration is backed by a four-party coalition. The alliance comprises the Authenticity and Modernity Party, the Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and the Party of Progress and Socialism.

These four political groups announced the formation of their governing majority in a joint statement issued on Monday. The cabinet totals 32 members, encompassing both ministers and ministers-delegate.

Seven women hold positions within the new administration, including El Mansouri. This figure marks an increase from the six female members who served in the previous government led by Aziz Akhannouch.

Several key figures retained their portfolios from the prior administration. Abdelouafi Laftit remains interior minister, Nasser Bourita continues as foreign minister, and Abdellatif Ouahbi stays on as justice minister.

Ahmed Toufiq also kept his position as the minister of Islamic affairs and endowments. The cabinet established a new portfolio dedicated to artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and administrative reform.

Ahmed Rahhou will lead the newly created Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation and Administrative Reform. The entire cabinet participated in the official appointment ceremony presided over by the monarch in the capital.
