Spain`s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal is facing a race against time to be fit for the 2026 World Cup after being ruled out for the remainder of Barcelona`s domestic season. The 18-year-old forward sustained a significant hamstring injury in his left leg during Barcelona`s narrow 1–0 victory over Celta Vigo on Wednesday. Despite the setback, the club remains optimistic that the young star will recover in time to represent Spain in North America this summer.
The injury occurred during a moment that should have been a highlight for Yamal. After converting a penalty in the 40th minute to give Barcelona the lead, the forward immediately signaled to the bench in distress. He clutched his left hamstring before dropping to the ground, unable to continue. Medical personnel assisted him off the field, and he was seen heading straight down the tunnel for evaluation. Barcelona confirmed the extent of the injury on Thursday, stating that Yamal will undergo a "conservative treatment plan" and will not feature in any of the club`s remaining six league fixtures.
Yamal shared his frustration on Instagram, expressing that being forced off the pitch at such a critical juncture "hurts more than I can explain." He vowed to return stronger, noting that this is "just a break" rather than the end of his journey. His absence comes as a blow to Barcelona, who currently sit nine points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table. Hansi Flick’s side will have to navigate their remaining matches, including the El Clasico on May 10, without their most explosive young talent.
For Spain, the news is a mixture of concern and hope. Yamal is a centerpiece of the national squad, which is scheduled to begin its World Cup campaign on June 15 against Cape Verde in Group H. With subsequent matches against Saudi Arabia on June 21 and Uruguay on June 27, Luis de la Fuente will be desperate to have Yamal at full fitness. The five-week recovery timeline suggests he should be ready for the opening match, but his lack of match rhythm heading into the tournament remains a primary concern for the Spanish coaching staff.
