Virat Kohli stepped down as India`s Test captain in January 2022. During his seven-year tenure, the star batter led India to 40 victories in 68 Test matches, solidifying his reputation as one of the format`s most successful leaders. His sudden decision shocked fans worldwide. He had previously resigned from T20 leadership and was later removed from ODI captaincy as well.
The star batter recently addressed the circumstances surrounding his difficult decision.
Speaking at the third edition of the `RCB Innovation Lab` Indian Sports Summit, Kohli admitted that leadership had completely consumed his inner being. He explained that he reached a position where he was the central focus for both batting performance and team leadership. Driven by a desire to keep Indian cricket at the top, he failed to realize the immense mental load it created in his daily life. By the time he officially resigned, he felt completely exhausted and drained.
Managing sky-high public expectations became incredibly difficult.
He added that his primary objective during his peak years was to ensure the team remained secure within the dressing room. He credited Ravi Shastri and his management team for their immense support during that period. However, as his personal form began to dip, the dual burden of captaincy and performance became overwhelming. While the period after resigning was painful, he expressed deep gratitude toward Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathour for helping him rediscover the joy of playing cricket.
Kohli regained his mental peace only after sharing his struggles with Dravid and Rathour.
He mentioned that they cared for him in a way that reminded him of why he truly wants to play. Their supportive nature helped him realize the significance of his efforts all over again. He is now back to fighting on the field with renewed confidence, thanks to their guidance and mentorship during his transition away from leadership.
