Bangladeshi mountaineer Nurunnahar Nimni has made history by successfully reaching the summit of Mount Everest, the world`s highest peak. She fulfilled her long-awaited dream by hoisting the red and green flag of Bangladesh on the peak at approximately 5:24 AM Nepal time on Wednesday (May 27). This remarkable feat makes her the eighth Bangladeshi citizen and only the third woman from the country to stand atop the world. The official confirmation was delivered by the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club early this morning.
Nimni’s success marks the end of a long 14-year wait for a female climber from Bangladesh to conquer the summit. The last successful female ascents from the country were recorded in 2012 by legendary mountaineers Nishat Majumdar and Wasfia Nazreen. Notably, Nimni was the sole participant representing Bangladesh in this year`s highly challenging high-altitude mountaineering season.
The expedition began on April 11, when Nimni departed from Dhaka for Kathmandu to initiate her adjustment phases. After navigating through treacherous basecamp paths and enduring multiple spells of adverse Himalayan weather, she launched her final summit push on May 25. Moving from Camp-4 through the night, she pushed past exhaustion to reach the ultimate geographic point just as dawn broke over Nepal.
In her professional life, Nurunnahar Nimni serves as a Principal Officer at Pubali Bank PLC. She holds an academic degree from the Department of Geology at the University of Dhaka, where her initial interest in structural landscapes and mountaineering bloomed. Her milestone achievement marks a significant breakthrough in the country’s sports and outdoor adventure community, proving the growing capabilities of its women under extreme pressures.
