The death toll from a Houthi missile attack on a security training centre in Yemen’s southern Shabwa province rose to 73 on Tuesday. Fourteen other people were missing following the strike.
Shabwa Governor Awad bin al-Wazir announced the updated figures during a meeting held to review the conditions of the wounded. Yemen’s official SABA news agency reported the details.
Bin al-Wazir condemned the strike and called for those responsible to be held accountable. Local authorities received directives to monitor the health of the injured and provide necessary medical treatment.
Officials were also instructed to support the families of the victims and the missing.
Authorities in Shabwa initially reported on Monday that at least 53 people had died and more than 200 others were wounded. The casualties occurred when ballistic missiles struck the Martyr Ahmed al-Sulaimani Training Center.
New internal security recruits were undergoing training at the facility when the attack took place.
A Yemeni military spokesperson stated that the Houthis launched three ballistic missiles at the location. The site was actively used to train security and police personnel. The Houthis did not immediately issue a comment regarding the strike.
The attack occurred amid escalating hostilities between the Houthi movement and forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognised government. The government receives backing from a Saudi-led military coalition.
Conflict has gripped Yemen since 2014. In that year, the Houthis captured the capital city of Sanaa and took control of much of the country’s northern territory.
