Bahrain and France Sign Accord on Civilian Nuclear Program

Bahrain and France signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday to advance a civilian nuclear program. The agreement was finalised at the end of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Manama.

Macron held talks with Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa during the trip. The Bahrain News Agency reported that the two leaders witnessed the signing between the foreign ministries of both nations.

The memorandum focuses on developing expertise and capabilities for Bahrain’s civilian nuclear program and establishes specialised training initiatives.

King Hamad and Macron reviewed strategic cooperation across investment, economic development, defence, sustainable development and advanced technology.

The leaders discussed regional and international affairs, focusing specifically on the situation in the Middle East.

King Hamad pointed to a defence cooperation agreement signed during his visit to France in February, describing it as a step toward broader collaboration in security, energy and technology. The Bahraini monarch stressed the importance of state sovereignty and international law, calling for resolving crises through dialogue.

Macron advocated for deeper cooperation in defence capabilities and military industries, and stronger energy ties between Paris and Manama.

Following his meetings in Bahrain, Macron travelled to Qatar and arrived in Doha on Tuesday evening, according to the Qatar News Agency.

Macron’s regional tour runs from October 19 to 21 and includes stops in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The French presidency stated the tour aims to strengthen partnerships, energy security and regional stability, alongside ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
