Looking through the pages of history, it becomes evident that rulers throughout the ages have employed various ruthless tactics to maintain their grip on power. From economic exploitation and cultural suppression to extreme levels of violence, tyrants have often resorted to the unthinkable to ensure their dominance. Some of these strategies were so horrific that they are regarded as the darkest chapters in human history. Among them is the politics of infanticide practiced by Pharaoh, as vividly described in the Holy Quran. This decree by the then-ruler of Egypt was not merely an act of random cruelty; it was a calculated political maneuver aimed at weakening an entire nation to protect his absolute authority.
According to historical descriptions, "Pharaoh" was not the name of a specific person but a title given to the emperors of ancient Egypt. Under the rule of the Coptic dynasty, Egypt reached the pinnacle of civilization and scientific advancement, evidenced by the construction of the Pyramids and the art of mummification. Research by historian Louis Golding suggests that the tyrant Pharaoh during the time of Prophet Musa (AS) was Ramesses II, while the one who eventually drowned in the Red Sea was his son, Merneptah. His mummy, discovered in 1907, remains a silent testament to the tragic end of an arrogant ruler who challenged the Almighty.
The root of this heinous political strategy lay in a dream that Pharaoh had. He envisioned a great fire emerging from the direction of Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), which consumed the homes and lives of the native Coptic Egyptians while leaving the migrant Bani Israel (Israelites) unharmed. Terrified, Pharaoh summoned the most prominent astrologers and sorcerers of his kingdom to interpret the dream. Their explanation was chilling: a male child would soon be born among the Israelites who would bring about the destruction of the Egyptian empire and its ruler.
Driven by fear for his throne, Pharaoh devised a plan to stop the birth of this child by ordering the systematic mass killing of all newborn males among the Israelites. His long-term goal was to ensure that the Bani Israel community became void of young men over time. He envisioned a future where the older generation would die off and the women would be forced into servitude. To execute this plan, he established a network of midwives and executioners who monitored the pregnancies of Israelite women. If a boy was born, the executioner would be summoned immediately to slaughter the infant in front of the mother.
The Quran highlights this terrifying period of persecution in Surah Al-Baqarah: "And (remember) when We delivered you from the followers of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with a horrible torment, killing your sons and letting your women live, and in that was a great trial from your Lord" (Quran, 2:49). Despite this widespread slaughter, Allah’s plan prevailed. He sent Prophet Musa (AS) into the world during the height of this massacre and ensured his protection through divine intervention. Ironically, the very child Pharaoh sought to eliminate was safely raised within Pharaoh’s own palace, under his own royal protection.
This Quranic event reveals several profound realities. First, it demonstrates that tyrants are often willing to destroy future generations to preserve their own status. Second, it shows that power built upon the blood of the innocent is never sustainable. Finally, it serves as a reminder that divine justice is inevitable. Regardless of how mighty a tyrant may appear, their end is certain. The history of Pharaoh’s politics of infanticide is not just a story of the past but a timeless warning for all leaders about the consequences of oppression and the invincibility of truth.
