Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi received a phone call from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday. The call focused on halting regional escalation and pursuing a comprehensive solution to the crisis between Iran and the United States.
According to the Jordanian ministry, the two officials agreed to work toward a sustainable ceasefire. Safadi emphasized the necessity of combining diplomatic efforts to restore calm.
He stated that achieving lasting security requires foundations that protect every country in the region. The Jordanian minister also pointed to specific regional principles, noting the requirement to respect international law and the fundamentals of good neighbourliness.
Safadi called for an end to foreign interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. He stressed the importance of ensuring uninterrupted freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The high-level conversation took place as diplomatic initiatives sought to contain friction between Washington and Tehran. The two nations have faced persistent disagreements regarding the terms required to reopen the vital waterway.
Hostilities between the United States and Israel against Iran began on February 28. In response, Tehran launched attacks targeting Israel alongside US military facilities located in various Arab countries.
Washington and Tehran subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18. That agreement paved the way for formal negotiations, which later collapsed due to unresolved disputes.
Disagreements during those collapsed talks centred on several key issues. Chief among them were the conditions governing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a strategic passage for global energy shipments and commercial goods.
