Iranian Revolutionary Guard Shoots Down US-Made MQ-1 Drone

Iran’s military shot down a US-made MQ-1 drone east of the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the incident, stating that the unmanned aerial vehicle was brought down by its air defence system.

According to the Iranian Students News Agency, the interception took place in the skies above the area opposite the coastal region of Sirik. The Revolutionary Guard did not name the operator of the aircraft in its official announcement.

The military branch reported that this incident marks the 14th time an MQ-1 drone has been intercepted and destroyed by its defence network. The downing happens as indicators point to a potential new wave of military action by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Media reports on Tuesday indicated that Washington recently informed multiple Gulf Arab nations to prepare for a brief and intense military campaign targeting Tehran following the US midterm elections on November 3. US President Donald Trump has not reached a final verdict yet, though sources suggest he leans toward a major post-election offensive.

Hostilities between the countries previously escalated when the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. That conflict triggered retaliatory missile and drone strikes from Tehran across the region, alongside the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a vital corridor for international energy shipments.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict faced a setback in June. A memorandum of understanding intended to establish a path toward a final peace agreement ultimately collapsed over disputes regarding several issues, including freedom of navigation within the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key choke point for global oil transportation. The military engagement and subsequent closure of the shipping lane have continued to impact regional security and energy markets.

Iranian authorities maintain their defensive posture in the region as monitoring of Gulf airspace continues. No official response regarding the downed drone has been issued by Washington or military commands in the area.
