Sudan Accuses Ethiopia of Permitting Drone Strikes from Territory

Sudan accused the Ethiopian government on Wednesday of allowing drone attacks to be launched against Sudanese territory from across the border.

Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Muawiya Osman Khalid made the remarks during a seminar hosted by the Sudan News Agency in Khartoum. Khalid stated that Ethiopia had continued its aggression against Sudan without deterrence.

“Ethiopia has not been deterred and has continued its aggression against Sudan,” Khalid said.

He stated that Sudan reserved the right to protect itself and keep the international community informed about the situation. He also urged international justice institutions to take action to halt the aggression.

During the seminar, Khalid drew a distinction between the Ethiopian government and its population. He emphasised that Sudan maintained good relations with the Ethiopian public while accusing the government of continuing drone strikes against Sudanese civilians.

He maintained that Sudanese institutions were fully capable of protecting the country. Khartoum would continue its efforts to defend national security while raising its concerns on the international stage.

The statements followed a wave of drone attacks that targeted six electricity stations across Khartoum, Al-Jazira, Sennar and Al-Qadarif on Wednesday.

The Sudanese government has accused Ethiopia of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and permitting drones to take off from Ethiopian soil. Addis Ababa has consistently denied the allegations, stating that it respects the sovereignty of Sudan.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023. The war erupted due to disagreements over plans to integrate the paramilitary group into the regular military.

The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced nearly 13 million. United Nations and international estimates indicate the conflict has severely worsened famine and the humanitarian crisis across the country.
