Gaza Hospital Generators Face Permanent Shutdown Over Oil Shortage

Gaza health officials warned on Wednesday that hospital generators could shut down permanently unless supplies reach the besieged territory immediately. Engineering teams are monitoring the equipment under severe pressure to maintain electricity in vital departments, according to a ministry statement.

The ministry reported that the machinery has operated continuously for thousands of hours without adequate oil or routine maintenance. This strain has brought the units to the final point of mechanical danger.

Generators face the risk of burning out completely due to the lack of oil. Officials cautioned that such damage would render the equipment permanently unusable, even if fuel and resources arrive later.

The health authority renewed its appeal for urgent international intervention. The crisis now extends beyond securing operating oil to protecting the remaining generators from total structural failure.

Fuel reserves required to run the facility generators completely ran out, the ministry announced on Wednesday. At least 2,500 litres are urgently needed each month to prevent total collapse, as Israeli restrictions continue to block operating and maintenance supplies.

Medical authorities warned that this shortage threatens the closure of life-saving hospital departments. A previous report from September indicated that seventy percent of hospital generators had already stopped working because of shortages caused by the blockade.

Medical facilities across the enclave have depended almost entirely on generators since October 2023, when Israel cut external power supplies. These machines power intensive care units, operating rooms, neonatal incubators, ventilators, and dialysis equipment.

Gaza’s only power plant ceased operations on October 11, 2023, after depleting its fuel reserves. That shutdown caused a complete blackout across the territory, while widespread bombardment damaged power lines, cables, and distribution networks.

Extensive damage to the electrical grid has stopped hospitals from reconnecting to public power sources. Consequently, medical facilities remain entirely reliant on generators.

This electricity crisis persists despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10, 2025. Israeli restrictions on essential supplies continue to block the rehabilitation of the health system in Gaza.
