Israeli Strike on Gaza University Building Kills Three Staff

An Israeli strike on a university in Gaza City killed three people on Sunday, staff and a local hospital said. The civil defense agency reported four others killed elsewhere in the territory.

Al Shifa Hospital stated that it received three bodies following the attack and treated eight students who were wounded in the drone strike.

Two sources at the Islamic University confirmed that the three individuals killed were administrative staff members.

Gaza’s education ministry said the students had been present for classes when the building was hit. The military stated when reached for comment that it was looking into the reports.

The ministry condemned the strike and said global silence regarding attacks on students and universities encourages the continuation of these crimes.

The attack occurs at a time when the higher education sector is facing total annihilation, the ministry said. It stated that 95 percent of buildings belonging to academic institutions have been damaged as a result of the war.

The statement described the assault as part of a continuous series of attacks on education. Over the previous six days, 10 students and educators had been killed by the occupation’s fire.

A truce has been in effect in Gaza for over a year, but has failed to completely halt the violence there.

Gaza civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said four other people were killed on Sunday in separate incidents. These included two deaths in an airstrike in the southern city of Khan Yunis, one in central Deir al Balah, and one in the north of the Strip.
