Nineteen-year-old Russian teenager Mira Andreeva has made history at Roland Garros, reaching her first-ever Grand Slam final at the 2026 French Open. In a commanding performance during Thursday’s semifinal, the eighth seed defeated Ukraine‍‍`s Marta Kostyuk in straight sets, marking a significant milestone in her burgeoning professional career. BBC Sport and Reuters confirmed the convincing nature of her victory, which has solidified her position as a rising star in the tennis world.

Prior to the semifinal clash, the odds and recent history did not favor Andreeva. She had lost both of her previous encounters against the 15th-seeded Kostyuk earlier this year, including a defeat in the Madrid Open final. Kostyuk had entered the match boasting a 17-match winning streak on clay, yet she proved unable to counter Andreeva’s tactical precision on the Parisian court. Andreeva wrapped up the dominant victory in just 1 hour and 16 minutes, taking the first set in a swift 34 minutes.

Kostyuk appeared visibly nervous throughout the match, committing numerous unforced errors. She lost her serve in the opening game following two double faults and two unforced errors. Although she showed signs of a comeback at the start of the second set, the Ukrainian star ultimately succumbed to 34 unforced errors, effectively ending her campaign. Conversely, Andreeva remained composed, utilizing a blend of impeccable defense and sharp counter-attacks to maintain control of the proceedings.

Following the match, Andreeva expressed her immense joy, noting that securing a victory after her previous loss in Madrid made her first Grand Slam final appearance even more special. She shared that all her emotions had come together in this moment of triumph. Having suffered a disappointing semifinal exit at the 2024 French Open against Jasmine Paolini, the teenager used that experience to navigate the high-pressure environment this time around.

Among the four semifinalists, Andreeva was the only player with previous Grand Slam semifinal experience, a factor that proved decisive on the court. Looking ahead to Saturday’s championship match, she will face either fellow Russian Diana Shnaider or Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska, who were scheduled to play the second semifinal later in the day. As the nineteen-year-old looks toward her first Grand Slam title, the global tennis community is eagerly anticipating the possibility of crowning a new champion at Roland Garros.
