Fifteen-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has stunned the cricket world by earning a maiden call-up to the Indian national T20 squad. To ensure the young star remains focused and free from the mental strain of international travel, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken an unprecedented and humane decision. The BCCI confirmed on Sunday that Vaibhav’s parents will be allowed to accompany him on all international tours, with the board covering all travel and accommodation expenses.
The left-handed opening batter delivered a spectacular performance for the Rajasthan Royals in the latest edition of the Indian Premier League. Throughout the season, he amassed an incredible 776 runs, featuring one century and five half-centuries, finishing as the tournament`s top run-getter. In addition to winning the Orange Cap, Vaibhav secured the Most Valuable Player and Emerging Player awards. His extraordinary form in domestic cricket left the selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, with little choice but to include the teenager in the national setup.
By stepping onto the field for his international debut, Vaibhav is poised to make history. When Sachin Tendulkar made his international Test debut against Pakistan in 1989, he was sixteen years and 205 days old. Upon appearing in the upcoming T20 series against Ireland or England, Vaibhav will surpass Tendulkar to become the youngest international cricketer in Indian history, securing a prestigious record at just fifteen.
Currently, Vaibhav is in Sri Lanka playing a tri-series for the India A squad. The board recognizes that having a support system is vital for a teenager dealing with the immense pressure of international competition. BCCI Secretary Debajit Saikia told AFP that at fifteen, parents are a player`s greatest support system. He added that if Vaibhav`s parents wish to accompany him on major tours like those in Ireland and England, the BCCI will arrange and fund everything from their flights to their stay.
Vaibhav’s first test with the reigning T20 world champions begins later this month. India is scheduled to play two T20 matches against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28. This will be followed by a high-voltage five-match T20 series against England, starting July 1. Beyond these fixtures, selectors have also included the young opener in the squad for the Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Japan this September and October. With his family by his side, the cricketing world waits to see how the teenage prodigy handles the weight of national expectations.
