Uefa Lashes Out at Fifa Over Balogun Decision

Uefa has issued a scathing critique of Fifa’s decision to bypass the automatic suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun, labeling the move as unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable. Balogun was sent off during a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina and, under standard tournament regulations, was expected to miss the round-of-16 tie against Belgium. However, Fifa opted not to enforce the sanction, clearing the forward to participate.

In a formal statement, Uefa argued that intervening to cancel a disciplinary suspension mid-tournament violates the core principles of football governance. The European body warned that such decisions undermine the credibility of the competition and create a dangerous precedent where similar disciplinary cases may now demand equal treatment. This move has drawn immediate condemnation from across the sporting world, with many officials questioning the autonomy of Fifa‍‍`s regulatory process.

Reports confirmed by CBS News suggest that Balogun’s reinstatement followed a phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Fifa President Gianni Infantino last Thursday. On Sunday, President Trump publicly thanked Fifa for what he termed a reversal of a great injustice. The Belgian Football Association (RBFA) expressed its astonishment, with Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot stating that if a phone call truly influenced the outcome, it represents a blatant violation of basic sporting rules.

Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter also weighed in, taking to social media to denounce the move. Blatter asserted that football should never become a playground for political power and emphasized that disciplinary actions must be governed by independent bodies, not political influence. He questioned the direction Fifa is taking under Infantino’s leadership, noting that such interventions erode trust in the institution.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel also expressed confusion regarding the disciplinary process following the Balogun ruling. Tuchel questioned how other teams might seek to appeal their own disciplinary decisions, highlighting the lack of consistency currently plaguing the tournament. Although Fifa cited a clause in its disciplinary code that permits the suspension of measures, critics argue this directly contradicts tournament regulations that mandate an automatic one-match ban for red cards. As the Belgian FA prepares to challenge the decision, the incident has escalated into a significant legal and political row that threatens to overshadow the remainder of the World Cup.
