Malaysia`s Sepang International Circuit will host the rescheduled 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2 to 4 following an agreement between motor racing officials and host governments, Formula One announced on Sunday at the Hungarian Grand Prix, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
The race was originally scheduled to take place in Sakhir in April 2026 as the fourth round of the Formula One season but was postponed due to escalating military conflict and security risks in the Middle East. Under the newly ratified agreement signed by the government of Malaysia, the kingdom of Bahrain, the International Automobile Federation, and Formula One management, the October event near Kuala Lumpur International Airport will officially be designated as the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Formula One Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali welcomed the arrangement during an official briefing, describing the return to Southeast Asia as a major win for global motorsport fans. Domenicali highlighted that the sport had demonstrated remarkable flexibility in adapting to geopolitical disruptions while securing a full championship calendar. The Sepang circuit, which previously hosted annual Grand Prix events from 1999 until 2017, returns to the Formula One calendar after a nine-year absence caused by rising host fees and shifting commercial priorities.
Bahrain Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa issued a statement praising the international collaboration that allowed the event to proceed despite ongoing regional instability. Positioned logistically between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku and the Singapore Grand Prix, the insertion of the Sepang event creates an efficient three-race Asian swing for teams and freight logistics.
What remains unclear is whether the season-ending races scheduled for Qatar and Abu Dhabi in late November and early December will be able to proceed if regional tensions persist. Motorsport insiders indicate that alternative European venues, including Italy`s Imola and Portugal`s Portimao, are being considered as contingency locations should security conditions degrade further. For now, track officials at Sepang have commenced technical preparations to welcome drivers and spectators back to one of Asia`s most historic racing circuits.
