Mercedes driver George Russell held off Red Bull’s four-time world champion Max Verstappen to seal a tense lights-to-flag victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday. The British racer crossed the line a razor-thin 0.196 seconds ahead of his charging rival around the demanding Baku street circuit. The result delivered Russell his eighth career Formula One triumph and his third of the current campaign.
Two safety car periods erased what had appeared to be a comfortable cruise.
Verstappen, who lined up eighth on the grid, mounted a fierce charge that brought him alongside the leading Mercedes through the final sector. The triumph marked Russell’s first win since the Austrian Grand Prix in late June, trimming the points deficit to teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 15 points to 66 after 15 rounds. Russell reflected afterwards that returning to the top step was extraordinary, noting that his pace and confidence had surged consistently following the mid-season break.
Frenchman Isack Hadjar completed the podium for Red Bull, celebrating a fresh contract extension in his first appearance after missing three rounds with a wrist injury. Antonelli, who began from 16th position following a crash in Friday`s qualifying session, executed a calculated recovery drive to secure fifth place and limit the damage to his championship advantage.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc captured fourth position ahead of the Italian rookie, while his teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, took sixth. Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad finished seventh, Haas secured a double points haul with Esteban Ocon in eighth and Oliver Bearman in ninth, and Williams driver Carlos Sainz collected the final point in 10th.
