Glenn Maxwell Retires From Australian T20 International Cricket

Australian short-form cricket star Glenn Maxwell has brought an end to his international career in the shortest format of the game. The 38-year-old previously retired from one-day international cricket in 2025. He has now decided to hang up his bat and gloves for both the Australian T20 team and his state side.

Maxwell represented Australia at the T20 World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka earlier this year. Over the course of his international career, he featured in 130 T20 matches. He accumulated 2,897 runs at an average of 28.97, maintaining a striking rate of 154.42.

His contributions extended to bowling and fielding. The all-rounder claimed 51 wickets and secured 62 catches. His highest individual score in the format was an unbeaten 145 runs, achieved against Sri Lanka in 2016.

Reflecting on his journey, Maxwell expressed appreciation for his time in national colours. He said he was grateful for the time he was able to play for his country.

He added that if anyone had offered him such a career when he first entered the Victorian change rooms around 2009, he would have bitten their hand off. He stated he is extremely grateful to have played that much for his country.

Maxwell also aimed to leave a legacy for younger generations. He hoped to inspire kids who want to take the game up, to want to play differently and to be open and vulnerable and to not shy away and be themselves.

Looking back at his broader international journey, he mentioned his surprise at receiving his Test cap. He noted it felt pretty incredible when even getting his first Test cap, well and truly before he was probably ready.

Beyond his 130 T20 appearances, Maxwell played seven Test matches and 149 one-day internationals for Australia. He also enjoyed an expansive and productive first-class and List A career representing Victoria.

Despite stepping away from international and state duties, the veteran player will not leave the sport entirely. He confirmed he will continue to play Twenty20 franchise cricket.

His upcoming commitments include playing for the Melbourne Stars in the forthcoming Big Bash League.
