Saudi Arabia is set to make a historic entry into the global cricket arena by launching its first-ever franchise T20 tournament. According to a comprehensive report by ESPN Cricinfo, the wealthy Middle Eastern nation will officially host the inaugural edition of the tournament, named the Dunes League T20, in October 2026. The Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation has already granted formal approval for this grand cricket project. Following its massive financial investments in football, boxing, and golf, Saudi Arabia`s latest decision to enter the franchise cricket market has captured widespread international attention.
Over the past five years, Saudi Arabia has emerged as a major player in international sports through multi-billion-dollar investments aimed at diversifying its domestic economy. To reduce its traditional dependence on oil revenue and fulfill the goals of Vision 2030, the kingdom has hosted several high-profile events in football, tennis, and combat sports. Rumors had been circulating within global cricket circles for a few years that Saudi Arabia intended to establish a mega T20 league capable of rivaling the Indian Premier League, and those plans are now transitioning from concept to reality.
The inaugural season of the Dunes League T20 will feature six competitive franchise teams. Organizers have selected Taif, a mountain city located near Jeddah, as the official venue to host all the matches of the tournament. The Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation is executing this project in a joint partnership with the South Asian Network. Alongside this development, two prominent international sports management firms, Unique Sports Group and Prolific, are directly involved in the league`s development. Unique Sports Group notably represents elite England fast bowler Jofra Archer, while Prolific manages Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma.
To boost the tournament`s global profile and commercial value, the organizers have signed legendary Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as the official brand ambassador for the league. While the tournament will predominantly feature recently retired international stars, it will also include several prominent cricketers who remain highly active in global franchise circuits. According to the official regulations established for the competition, each franchise is permitted a maximum of four players who have actively represented a full-member nation in international cricket over the last two years.
The tournament organizers are preparing to offer lucrative financial incentives to attract global talent in its opening season. Reports indicate that the highest-tier players in the competition could earn salaries reaching up to one hundred thousand US dollars. Discussions regarding Saudi investments in a grand-slam style global cricket circuit had previously taken place with the Australian Cricketers Association last year. Saudi sports officials believe that the Dunes League T20 will not only accelerate the popularity of cricket within the Middle East but also establish the nation as an influential powerhouse in modern cricket.
