Pope Leo Calls for AI to be ‘Disarmed’ in New Encyclical

Pope Leo has issued the first major teaching document of his papacy, issuing a stark warning that artificial intelligence must be "disarmed." In a significant address at the Vatican, the Pope cautioned that the unchecked advancement of AI technology risks creating "new digital slaveries," urging world leaders and tech innovators to confront the profound ethical challenges posed by emerging algorithms. The document includes a formal apology for the Church‍‍`s role in slavery.

The encyclical, titled "Magnifica Humanitas" ("Magnificent Humanity"), draws parallels between the historical injustices of traditional slavery and the contemporary threats posed by AI. Pope Leo suggested that humanity is currently at a moral crossroads, noting that the normalization of exploitation in the production and application of AI could lead to widespread human suffering and humiliation.

The presentation was notably attended by AI experts, including Christopher Olah, co-founder of the AI firm Anthropic. Olah remarked that the ethical implications of AI extend far beyond the research community, noting that current incentives within the industry can sometimes conflict with necessary moral constraints. He emphasized that the questions raised by such rapid technological growth are fundamental to human society. The Pope also condemned the integration of AI into military weaponry.

Pope Leo argued that reducing human oversight in combat systems further erodes the possibility of a "just war," warning that AI risks sparking conflicts more rapidly and impersonally. By transforming defense into mere threat prediction and reducing human victims to data points, AI threatens to strip away the remaining vestiges of humanity in warfare. He concluded that no algorithm can render war morally acceptable.
