UK Athletics has been fined 350,000 British pounds ($471,000) over the tragic death of United Arab Emirates Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei, who was killed during a training session in London. The ruling was delivered on Tuesday following a comprehensive judicial inquiry into the 2017 incident at the Newham Leisure Centre. Hayayei was actively preparing for the World Para Athletics Championships when a massive metal throwing cage collapsed directly onto him.The structural failure resulted in immediate fatal injuries for the veteran sportsman.
The 36-year-old athlete had previously made his international debut in the javelin and shot put events at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games in Brazil. A joint investigation conducted by local police and health safety executives discovered that the critical stabilizing metal lattice base plates of the discus cage were entirely missing during the session. UK Athletics officially pleaded guilty to charges of corporate manslaughter earlier this year in February, which led directly to the newly announced fiscal penalties and an additional order to pay 44,000 pounds in prosecution costs. Furthermore, the former head of sport for the championships, 78-year-old Keith Davies, also pleaded guilty to statutory health and safety violations and received a community service order requiring 175 hours of unpaid labor.
Crown Prosecution Service representative Colin Gibbs stated that the sports organization displayed gross negligence in its baseline safety management, leading to an entirely preventable catastrophe. He emphasized that equipment was left in a seriously compromised condition, directly undermining the welfare of competing international delegates. Following the sentencing, UK Athletics issued a public statement offering a profound apology, affirming their current institutional focus on implementing stronger structural safeguards across all athletic facilities.
