Perched at an elevation of 4,554 meters above sea level on the Punta Gnifetti peak along the Italy-Switzerland frontier, the Rifugio Capanna Regina Margherita balances on the edge of a sheer cliff face within the Monte Rosa massif. Flanked on one side by a steep snowfield and on the other by a vertical kilometer of open space, the narrow three-story metal-clad hut was inaugurated in 1893 in honor of Italy’s Queen Margherita of Savoy. While the facility initially operated as a high-altitude scientific research laboratory, it has evolved into a rustic shelter for alpine expeditions.
Acclimatization remains the most critical barrier for hikers ascending the icy slopes.
Roughly 30,000 mountaineers summit the peak annually, with approximately 4,000 securing overnight bookings in the refuge during its brief operational window between mid-June and early September. Ascending groups typically initiate their climb from the Italian valley settlement of Alagna Valsesia, using crampons and safety rope systems to navigate the treacherous crevasse labyrinths traversing the Lys and Gorner glaciers. Because hikers ascend from low elevations to well over 4,000 meters in roughly 48 hours, severe altitude sickness frequently affects participants who fail to acclimatize in staged phases.
Supply logistics for the 70-bed facility depend entirely on helicopter flights from valley depots. When severe storms strike the massif, air transport ceases, leaving climbers and wardens temporarily isolated inside the vibrating metal structure until weather fronts pass over the Alpine ridge.
