Iran Reports Second Tanker Fire Near Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian Navy reported another oil tanker fire on Thursday in a restricted zone east of the Strait of Hormuz. Monitoring teams spotted the burning vessel during routine patrols.

The navy’s public relations office said the vessel was trying to cross an unauthorised area. Its tracking systems were disabled at the time.

Authorities did not identify the tanker, its flag, or its operator. They also gave no details about the cause of the fire, possible casualties, or the crew.

The military stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is under the full control of regular naval forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy.

This follows a similar event on Tuesday, when the navy reported another tanker catching fire east of the strait after entering a restricted zone with its tracking systems turned off.

On Wednesday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy reported that a container ship carrying more than 2,500 containers sank. The vessel struck a naval mine while attempting to navigate an unauthorised route south of the strait.

These incidents follow strict maritime regulations imposed by Iran on commercial shipping in the area. The strait is a vital global route for energy and commodity supplies.

Navigation through the waterway is a central point of contention in talks between Washington and Tehran. A war began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28 before a ceasefire was reached in April.

Clashes between Washington and Tehran resumed as negotiations stalled, even after the two sides signed a framework agreement in June.
