Russia Launches 1,560 Drones at Ukraine: 3 Killed in Kyiv

Russia has unleashed one of its largest aerial assaults since the beginning of the war, targeting Ukraine‍‍`s capital, Kyiv, with a staggering wave of missiles and drones. According to Ukrainian authorities, the barrage has killed at least three people and wounded 40 others. The strike, which hit a nine-story residential building in Kyiv, has left residents trapped under rubble, with rescue operations continuing under high-stress conditions. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba confirmed that the strikes also targeted ports in the southern Odesa region and critical railway infrastructure.

The sheer scale of the attack is unprecedented. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that since midnight on Wednesday, Russia has deployed over 1,560 attack drones against Ukrainian cities. In the latest overnight wave alone, Moscow launched 670 drones and 56 missiles. "These are definitely not the actions of those who believe the war is coming to an end," Zelenskyy stated, directly challenging recent narratives that suggested a potential de-escalation of the conflict.

This massive escalation comes as a crushing blow to international diplomacy. Just last week, US President Donald Trump had brokered a fragile three-day ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow, which had raised faint hopes for a broader peace settlement. Russian President Vladimir Putin had even hinted on Saturday that the war might be "heading to an end." However, the moment the truce expired on Tuesday, Russia responded with overwhelming force, effectively shattering the peace initiative led by the Trump administration.

Here is the thing: the Kremlin has quickly moved to dampen any expectations of a softening stance. On Wednesday, Moscow reiterated its hardline demand: Ukraine must fully withdraw from the eastern Donbas region before any full-scale peace talks can commence. Kyiv, understandably, has rejected this ultimatum, labeling it as a demand for total capitulation. What this really means is that despite the high-profile diplomacy from Washington, the fundamental positions of both warring parties remain as irreconcilable as ever.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted that the wounded included two children, highlighting the high civilian toll of the latest drone blitz. Zelenskyy has urged Ukraine’s partners not to remain silent in the face of such aggression, calling for urgent support to bolster the country’s air defense systems. As rescue workers continue to dig through the debris of the collapsed Kyiv apartment block, the "Mission Impossible" of finding a diplomatic solution seems further away than ever, with 1,560 drones serving as a violent reminder of the war‍‍`s ongoing brutality.

With Russia rejecting peace talks unless Ukraine surrenders the Donbas, do you think Trump‍‍`s "deal-making" diplomacy can survive such a massive military escalation?
