Australian Father Killed in Horrific Shark Attack Near Perth

A 38-year-old Australian father of two was killed following a horrific shark attack on Saturday off the coast of Western Australia. Steven Mattaboni was spearfishing with friends at Horseshoe Reef, located northwest of the popular Rottnest Island near Perth. Local authorities confirmed that a four-meter (13-foot) shark bit him on the lower leg while he was diving roughly one kilometer offshore.

The attack occurred unexpectedly near the group‍‍`s vessel.

Western Australia Police Sergeant Michael Wear stated that Mattaboni was approximately 20 meters away from his boat when the incident transpired. His friends witnessed the confrontation and immediately rushed him back to the mainland, but emergency medical teams were unable to revive him. Mattaboni leaves behind his wife, Shirene Mattaboni, and their two young daughters, including a four-month-old infant and a toddler turning three next month. In an official statement, his wife described him as a fiercely loyal, endlessly generous gentleman who deeply loved the ocean.

Tributes also poured in from the local community and sports organizations. The Kingsley Amateur Football Club, where Mattaboni previously played, shared an online memorial remembering him as a deeply loved friend with a vibrant presence. Graham Henderson, president of the Australian Underwater Federation, expressed his condolences and noted that recreational divers remain highly vulnerable compared to competitive events where safety boats and monitoring drones are standard.

A formal investigation has been launched into the incident.

State Police Minister Reece Whitby commended the immediate response of the victim‍‍`s friends, acknowledging their bravery during an incredibly distressing and tragic scene. The Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirmed receiving reports matching the description of the predatory encounter. Police personnel are currently compiling a comprehensive report for the state coroner.
