The Arab League has demanded an international investigation into the alleged torture of Gaza detainees held in an Israeli facility. In a formal statement issued on Tuesday, the bloc condemned recurring assaults on prisoners inside the Rakevet wing of Ramla Prison.
The league said the violence had left numerous detainees with physical injuries and burn marks. It described the actions as direct violations of international humanitarian law, citing the Geneva Conventions and the Convention against Torture.
According to the Cairo-based organization, these practices constituted crimes against humanity that required full accountability. The statement followed an October 27 report published by the Palestinian Prisoners Media Office detailing systematic abuse.
That earlier report documented regular assaults occurring on Fridays and Saturdays within the facility’s Rakevet wing. The media office stated that guards used batons, pepper spray, gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades against the captives.
Prison guards reportedly entered a cell with police dogs and removed detainees to an area without surveillance cameras for further beatings. The Palestinian office warned that the ongoing mistreatment severely endangered lives, particularly among those already sick or wounded.
Ramla Prison is located in central Israel and operates under the administration of the Israel Prison Service. The Arab League demanded an immediate halt to the abuse and urged access for outside monitors.
The bloc called on Israel to permit unrestricted entry for the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent observers. Such access was necessary to document conditions and deliver medical care to suffering inmates.
The league pressed for the immediate release of all sick and wounded prisoners alongside an end to arbitrary detention policies. It appealed directly to the international community, the United Nations Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly.
The international bodies were urged to intervene to protect Palestinian detainees and dismantle prevailing impunity. There was no immediate response from Israeli authorities regarding the Arab League statement.
