Israeli Democrats Leader Warns Netanyahu May Attack Iran to Stay in Power

The likelihood of another round of fighting with Iran is growing, according to a warning on Tuesday from Yair Golan, the leader of the Israeli Democrats.

Writing on the United States-based social media platform X, Golan stated that the situation showed just how much Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has failed. He said Israel had reached a point of repeated rounds of fighting with Iran.

Golan issued his remarks as Israeli and American media reports suggested that Israel and Washington could launch another attack on Iran. The reports indicated this could happen after the US midterm elections scheduled for Tuesday, November 3.

According to Golan, Netanyahu lacks the moral legitimacy and the basic capacity to manage another conflict with Iran. He called for the formation of an alternative government as soon as possible.

The Israeli politician warned that the security of the country and the safety of its citizens are at stake under the current leadership. He argued that forming a new government is of utmost importance.

The warning followed inconclusive parliamentary elections where neither Netanyahu’s bloc nor the opposition secured enough seats to govern. Preliminary results showed Netanyahu’s bloc winning 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset.

Meanwhile, Jewish opposition parties secured 48 seats, and Palestinian parties won 19 seats. All blocs fell short of the 61 seats required for a parliamentary majority.

These results have raised several possible political scenarios, including a government backed by Palestinian parties, a unity government, or yet another election.

Netanyahu, 76, faces an ongoing corruption trial involving charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. A conviction could result in imprisonment for the prime minister.

He has also been wanted by the International Criminal Court since 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Those allegations relate to Palestinians during Israel’s war on Gaza, which began in October 2023.
