For a mother, her child is her most precious treasure, and casting that child into the unknown is the ultimate test of motherhood. The historical narrative of the mother of Musa (AS) casting her infant into the River Nile is not merely a miracle but a profound example of unwavering faith and trust in the divine plan. During a time when the tyrannical Pharaoh of Egypt issued a cruel decree to execute every newborn male of the Bani Israel, Musa (AS) was born. The atmosphere was thick with the cries of grieving families and the constant fear of soldiers seizing infants. Amid this horrifying context, the story of the mother of Moses stands as a beacon for every believer facing seemingly impossible trials.
According to Surah Al-Qasas, verse 7, Allah sent a divine inspiration or `Ilham` to the heart of Musa’s mother. The instruction was clear: she was to nurse the child, and if she feared for his safety, she was to cast him into the river. This command was coupled with a divine guarantee that Allah would return the child to her and elevate him to the status of a Messenger. In any human calculation, placing a newborn in a chest on a flowing river would seem like a death sentence. However, the mother of Musa (AS) overcame her maternal instincts through her absolute reliance on the promise of Allah, demonstrating the true essence of `Tawakkul`.
The emotional struggle of Musa’s mother after releasing the chest is described in the Quran as a moment where her heart became empty with grief. It is mentioned that she almost revealed the secret of her child out of sheer anxiety, but Allah strengthened her heart to keep her among the believers. Despite her pain, she remained strategic and instructed Musa’s sister to follow the chest from a distance. By divine design, the current carried the chest directly to the shores of Pharaoh’s palace. Queen Asiya (RA) was moved by the sight of the infant and convinced the stubborn Pharaoh to adopt him rather than execute him. Thus, the very man who sought to destroy the savior of the Bani Israel ended up sheltering him in his own home.
The most miraculous part of the narrative is the fulfillment of the divine promise. Once inside the palace, the infant Musa (AS) refused to nurse from any of the local wet nurses. The Quran informs us that Allah had forbidden other nurses for him to ensure his eventual return to his biological mother. Seeing the palace officials in distress, Musa`s sister stepped forward without revealing her identity and suggested a family that could care for the child. This family was, of course, their own. Consequently, Musa (AS) was reunited with his mother, who was now paid by the palace to nurse her own child. This story serves as a timeless reminder that when one places their trust in Allah and follows His guidance, He opens doors from places unimagined.
