Qurbani Nisab 2026: Who is Required to Perform the Sacrifice?

Qurbani, or Udhiya, is a profound act of worship in Islam that symbolizes devotion, sacrifice, and total submission to the will of Allah. As the season of Eid-ul-Adha approaches in 2026, many Muslims are seeking clarity on the specific wealth requirements that make this sacrifice mandatory. According to Islamic jurisprudence, Qurbani becomes an obligation (Wajib) for any adult, sane Muslim who possesses wealth equal to or exceeding a specific threshold, known as the Nisab, during the designated days of sacrifice from the 10th to the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah.

The Holy Quran underscores the importance of this ritual in Surah Al-Kawthar, where Allah commands the believers to pray and offer sacrifice (Quran, 108:2). Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) issued a stern warning to those who have the means but choose to neglect this duty, stating that whoever has the capacity to sacrifice and does not do so should not approach the place of Eid prayer (Musnad Ahmad, 2:321). This highlights that Qurbani is not merely a choice for the wealthy but a serious religious responsibility tied to one‍‍`s financial standing.

To determine eligibility, the Nisab for Qurbani is traditionally calculated based on the value of 52.5 tolas (approximately 612 grams) of silver. Given the current market trends as of May 2026, this threshold is estimated to be around 175,088 BDT or its equivalent in other currencies. It is crucial to verify the exact market rate of silver on the days of Eid to ensure an accurate calculation. The assets that contribute to this Nisab include cash on hand, bank balances, gold, silver, business inventory, and surplus property or vehicles that are not used for basic daily living. Basic necessities such as one’s primary residence, essential clothing, and everyday furniture are excluded from this calculation.

Islamic scholars emphasize that the spirit of Qurbani transcends the physical act of animal slaughter. It is a moment of spiritual purification and an opportunity for the forgiveness of sins. Hadith literature records that at the very moment the first drop of blood from the sacrificed animal hits the ground, Allah grants forgiveness to the person offering the sacrifice (Tirmidhi, 1493). Therefore, understanding the financial criteria is essential for every Muslim to fulfill their religious obligations correctly. By adhering to the rules of Nisab, believers ensure that their act of charity and sacrifice is accepted and aligned with the divine commands established by the Shariah.
