The expansion of Islam from a small group of followers in Makkah to a global influence is one of the most remarkable chapters in human history. This journey began when Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received his first revelation at the age of forty. Tasked with the divine mission of spreading the message of monotheism, he initially reached out to his own tribe, the Quraysh. In accordance with the customs of the time, he climbed the peak of Mount Safa to deliver a public warning. By calling out to the various clans of Makkah, he established a platform to invite them toward faith in Allah and the afterlife, urging them to save themselves from the consequences of the hereafter.
Despite the sincerity of his message, the response from the elite of Makkah was largely hostile. Abu Lahab, one of the Prophet`s own uncles, openly insulted him, leading to the revelation of Surah Al-Lahab, which condemned his arrogance. As the Prophet (PBUH) continued to preach during the pilgrimage seasons and in public markets, the Quraysh launched a sophisticated propaganda campaign. They attempted to discredit him by labeling him a poet, a storyteller, or someone possessed by spirits. They feared that accepting his message would undermine their tribal authority and the economic stability tied to the pagan traditions of the Kaaba.
The opposition soon escalated from verbal abuse to systemic physical persecution. The Prophet (PBUH) and his early followers endured immense suffering, including having animal remains thrown on them during prayer and thorns scattered in their paths. Despite these harrowing trials, the Prophet remained steadfast in his mission. When the people of Makkah showed no signs of acceptance, he sought a new audience in the city of Taif. However, the experience there was even more brutal, as he was pelted with stones and driven out of the city, yet he prayed for their guidance rather than their destruction.
The turning point for the faith came with the divine permission for Hijrah, or migration, to Medina. This migration was not merely an escape from persecution but a strategic move to establish a society based on Islamic principles. In Medina, the Prophet (PBUH) laid the foundations of a community that eventually transformed into a civilization. From this base, the light of Islam began to radiate across borders, reaching different cultures and continents. Today, over 1,400 years later, Islam has become the world`s most influential and fastest-growing religion, with billions of followers finding peace in its teachings. The story of its spread remains a testament to the power of truth and the resilience of faith in the face of adversity.
