Iranian Foreign Minister Consults Twelve Counterparts on Regional Security

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held telephone conversations with twelve of his international counterparts to discuss escalating regional tensions.

Writing on the United States social media platform Instagram, Araghchi stated that he outlined Tehran’s fundamental positions during the calls. He emphasised the necessity of respecting national sovereignty and halting aggression and threats.

The Iranian top diplomat called for an end to harmful foreign interference and stressed the importance of preventing any further spread of insecurity throughout the area. Araghchi advocated for the establishment of new regional security arrangements, specifying that these frameworks should be formed without the involvement of external powers from outside the region.

The extensive diplomatic contacts included separate conversations with foreign ministers from Turkey, Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, Egypt, and Jordan. He also spoke with representatives from the Greek Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Tunisia, and Iraq.

These discussions took place against ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at containing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The push seeks to avert any renewed military confrontation between the two adversaries.

The diplomatic divide centers on starkly different demands from both capitals. Washington has demanded Iranian concessions over its nuclear program as a strict condition for resuming formal negotiations.

Conversely, Tehran has called for the complete lifting of US sanctions. Iranian officials also demanded the release of frozen Iranian funds and official permission to export oil.

Military hostilities between Washington and Tehran previously escalated when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on 28 February 2026. That phase of conflict concluded when a ceasefire was reached in April.

However, military confrontation between Washington and Tehran resumed in July. The renewed fighting erupted amid stalled diplomatic efforts to reach a broader political settlement.
