Iran Executes Man Convicted Over Deadly Police Station Assault

Iran has executed a man convicted of taking part in a deadly assault on a police station, according to an announcement by the judiciary on Saturday.

The judiciary’s Mizan Online website identified the executed individual as Mohammad Aref Shahbakhsh. The report described him as an operative connected to the outlawed militant faction Jaish Al-Zolm, also known as Al-Adl. Authorities carried out the capital punishment in the morning after the completion of all legal procedures, the judiciary stated.

Shahbakhsh faced conviction for baghi, meaning armed rebellion against the Islamic state, and moharebeh, described as waging war against God. Mizan reported that these charges stemmed directly from his role in the armed raid.

The incident targeted the Qaleh Bid police station located in Khash city. The facility sits within the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan.

The assault resulted in casualties among police personnel, leaving several officers martyred and injured. Official reports did not specify the exact date when the attack occurred.

Sistan-Baluchistan ranks as one of Iran’s poorest provinces. The region has a long history of recurring clashes involving security forces, armed factions, Sunni militants, and members of the ethnic Baloch minority.

Violence and armed confrontations in the area have flared up again over recent months. Tehran frequently accuses the United States and Israel, which it terms arch-enemies, of providing support to armed groups operating inside the territory.

Iran applies capital punishment for a broad spectrum of offenses, encompassing murder as well as various security-related crimes.

International human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, maintain that Iran executes a higher number of individuals each year than any other nation worldwide, with the exception of China.
