British student Finn Joughin has been deported from Israel following his human rights activism protecting Palestinian children in the occupied West Bank, according to Al Jazeera. The 22-year-old served as an international volunteer with Proactive Presence, an activist movement dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable Palestinian communities from escalating attacks by Israeli settlers.
The incident occurred on August 29 in the village of Umm al-Khair, located within the Masafer Yatta area of the southern West Bank, which is categorized as Area C under the Oslo Accords. Joughin intervened when a group of settlers attempted to disrupt a football game involving local Palestinian children. He recounted to Al Jazeera that several teenagers and adult settlers surrounded the pitch, hurling verbal abuse at the families and attempting to breach residential properties.
When Joughin tried to prevent settlers from tearing down a perimeter fence, he was physically shoved, placed in a chokehold, and marched at gunpoint back to the unauthorized Carmel settlement outpost. Social media footage captured parts of the confrontation. Detained inside a concrete shelter for approximately thirty minutes, his identification documents, phone, and wallet were confiscated while his captors accused him of holding radical views and questioned him about supposed connections abroad.
Israeli military forces subsequently transferred Joughin to a police station in the settlement of Kiryat Arba in Hebron. Rather than receiving protection after reporting that he had been abducted by armed settlers, he faced hostility and verbal abuse from the soldiers. He realized that law enforcement officers shared the same antagonistic stance as the settlers operating in the occupied territory.
The following day, he was taken to a magistrate’s court in occupied Jerusalem, where legal counsel and prosecutors agreed on a deportation arrangement to bypass extended legal proceedings. Following interrogations regarding his political views and presence in the West Bank at an immigration facility near Ben Gurion International Airport, Joughin signed deportation papers and waived his right to appeal. He was returned to Britain on August 31 and slapped with a ten-year ban preventing his return to Israel or the Palestinian territories. Despite the harrowing ordeal, Joughin expressed pride in standing alongside vulnerable communities facing persistent displacement and settler violence. A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office confirmed that consular support was provided to the British national and his family throughout the detention process.
