The Indian government has announced plans to initiate legal proceedings to identify and deport illegal foreign nationals, including citizens from Bangladesh. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the government`s stance during a weekly press briefing held in New Delhi on Friday. He emphasized that the state remains committed to enforcing existing laws regarding foreign nationals residing in India without valid documentation.
Jaiswal stated that the administration has a clear legal framework to address the presence of foreign citizens, regardless of their country of origin. He noted that the process of verifying citizenship is currently underway, with several formal requests submitted to Bangladeshi authorities for confirmation. Once the verification process is complete, the Indian government intends to move forward with the deportation proceedings as per established legal protocols.
The official explained that India is adhering to existing bilateral mechanisms to handle the return of Bangladeshi nationals. Lists of individuals identified for verification have already been shared with the relevant authorities in Dhaka. Delhi is now awaiting a formal response from the Bangladeshi side to confirm the citizenship status of these individuals before finalizing the deportation plans. Jaiswal stressed the necessity of this bilateral cooperation to ensure the process remains orderly and efficient.
According to the spokesperson, approximately 3,000 applications regarding citizenship verification are currently pending with the Bangladeshi authorities. India expects an expedited resolution to these cases to clear the backlog. Jaiswal expressed optimism that the verification of these individuals would be completed swiftly, allowing the deportation process for those residing illegally to proceed without further delays.
