Mamata Not Returning to Congress: Rumors Denied

The aftermath of the West Bengal Assembly elections has plunged the Trinamool Congress (TMC) into a profound crisis, triggering intense political speculation across India. Following a string of electoral setbacks, rumors began swirling that Mamata Banerjee might seek a merger with the Congress party to salvage her party‍‍`s political future. The narrative gained momentum after long deliberations between Mamata Banerjee and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, compounded by a meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Abhishek Banerjee. However, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal clarified on Thursday that no such discussions have taken place.

Venugopal dismissed the reports as "baseless rumors," asserting that recent interactions between TMC and Congress leaders were centered purely on strategizing an effective opposition against the BJP and highlighting national concerns. Simultaneously, Mamata Banerjee’s inner circle has flatly denied any merger plans, terming the reports as malicious propaganda. Furthermore, a significant faction within the West Bengal state Congress has expressed vehement opposition to any prospect of Mamata Banerjee’s return, effectively blocking a path that many analysts once viewed as a strategic necessity.

The reality on the ground for the TMC is grim. Since the election defeat, a wave of rebellion has swept through the party ranks. Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, is reportedly spearheading a movement with 64 rebel MLAs aiming to form a breakaway faction. In a significant blow to the party’s cohesion in the Lok Sabha, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and a group of 20 MPs have declared their support for the BJP-led NDA coalition.

The exodus has extended to the Rajya Sabha as well. Following the resignations of Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Sushmita Dev, North Bengal MP Prakash Chik Baraik and the newly elected MP and actress Koel Mallick submitted their resignations on Thursday morning. These departures have reduced the TMC‍‍`s strength in the Rajya Sabha to just nine members. Political analysts suggest that while an alliance with Congress might have served as a tactical maneuver to prevent the TMC’s collapse, the internal strife and the fragmented state of the party’s traditional voter base have made such a reconciliation politically untenable for now.

Mamata Banerjee, who began her political career in Congress and was once a protégé of Rajiv Gandhi, famously severed ties in 1998 to found the Trinamool Congress. While her return to the Congress fold was once viewed by some as a potential solution to the current political instability, the leadership of both parties has now officially closed that chapter, leaving the Trinamool Congress to grapple with its existential crisis alone.
