Superstar Vijay Shakes Tamil Nadu Politics, TVK Short of Majority

Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has been fundamentally reshaped as film star-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), delivered a stunning performance in the state assembly elections. According to final results released on Monday, TVK emerged as the single largest party, securing 107 seats in the 234-member assembly. While Vijay fell short of the 118-seat majority mark, his debut has effectively ended the six-decade-long dominance of the Dravidian giants, DMK and AIADMK.

The election results marked a personal victory for Vijay, who won both the Perambur and Trichy East constituencies. In a historic upset, the ruling DMK suffered a massive blow as Chief Minister M.K. Stalin lost his long-held stronghold of Kolathur to TVK’s V.S. Babu. The DMK was reduced to 59 seats, while its traditional rival, the AIADMK, managed only 47. The shift reflects a significant anti-incumbency wave and a deep-seated desire for change among the electorate. Analysts are already drawing parallels between Vijay’s rise and the legendary M.G. Ramachandran, who famously broke away from the DMK to form his own government in 1977.

The journey to this electoral triumph was not without its challenges. Vijay officially launched TVK only in 2024, but he had been laying the groundwork for over a decade through his welfare network, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam. His political rise faced a major test last year following a tragic stampede at a party rally that resulted in multiple fatalities. Furthermore, his final film, "Jana Nayagan," faced significant hurdles with the film certification board, nearly delaying its release. Despite these setbacks, the data shows that younger voters and women across the state gravitated toward his promise of "clean politics" and an end to the established duopoly.

Vijay’s platform targeted corruption and unemployment while positioning himself as a defender of regional identity. He framed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as his ideological adversary, though the saffron party was reduced to just one seat in the assembly. Now, the focus shifts to coalition-building. With TVK needing 11 more seats to form a government, negotiations with smaller parties like the Congress, which holds 5 seats, and the PMK, with 4 seats, are expected to begin immediately. Both parties have hinted at their willingness to support a TVK-led administration.

Social scientists suggest that Vijay’s victory is not merely a verdict against Dravidian ideology but a demand for a "new imagination" in governance. The state recorded high economic growth under the previous administration, yet a sense of stagnation among the youth created a vacuum that Vijay skillfully filled. His transition from the screen to the assembly represents a calculated conversion of cinematic stardom into tangible political capital. As the state moves toward a coalition government, all eyes are on how the superstar will navigate the intricate realities of legislative power after decades of playing the hero on screen.
