BJP Set for Historic Win in West Bengal, TMC Trails Heavily

The political landscape of West Bengal appears to be undergoing a tectonic shift as the counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly Election progresses. For the first time in the state‍‍`s independent history, the Bharatiya Janata Party is on track to form its own government in the eastern stronghold. After 15 years of uninterrupted rule under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress is staring at a significant defeat, with early trends showing the saffron party comfortably crossing the magic number of 148 seats required for a majority in the 294-member house.

According to data reported by NDTV, the BJP was leading in 197 seats within the first four hours of counting, a staggering jump from its performance in previous years. In contrast, the Trinamool Congress was struggling to hold onto just 93 seats. Regional outlet Anandabazar Patrika presented a similarly stark picture, showing the BJP ahead in 183 constituencies while the TMC trailed at 102. While these numbers are based on early and middle rounds of counting, the wide margin suggests that a comeback for the incumbent administration is increasingly unlikely.

A major flashpoint in this election cycle has been the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls, which resulted in the deletion of approximately 8.9 million voters. This exercise, which removed nearly 11.6 percent of the total electorate, was vehemently opposed by Mamata Banerjee, who labeled it a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise her supporters. India Today reports that this demographic shift may have played a decisive role, as the number of deleted voters significantly exceeds the winning margins seen in several key constituencies during the 2021 elections.

The personal battle in the Bhabanipur constituency has drawn international attention, where Mamata Banerjee is defending her seat against her former protégé and current Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari. While the statewide trends favor the BJP, Banerjee has managed to maintain a lead in her local turf. After five rounds of counting, she was ahead by over 16,700 votes. However, this individual success provides little comfort to her party, which is losing grip on traditional bastions in the Presidency and South Bengal regions that were once considered impenetrable TMC fortresses.

The decline of the Left Front and the Congress party continues to be a notable feature of Bengal‍‍`s politics. Despite fielding candidates across the state, they have failed to emerge as a viable third alternative, with trends showing them leading in only a handful of seats. The emergence of a new political entity led by expelled TMC MLA Humayun Kabir also added a layer of complexity to the contest, particularly in minority-dominated areas, though its overall impact on the seat tally remains minimal.

BJP leaders in New Delhi have already begun celebrating what they call a historic mandate for change. Senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad attributed the results to a massive rejection of the TMC’s governance and what he described as the "arrogance" of the ruling leadership. He noted that the electorate has voted for development and an end to the cycle of political violence that has often marred the state‍‍`s democratic process.

Security remains high across the state, particularly after the Election Commission ordered repolling in some booths in the Falta constituency and other sensitive areas. As the final rounds of counting proceed through the evening, the air in Kolkata is filled with a mixture of celebration and uncertainty. If these trends hold, the result will mark the end of the Trinamool era and the beginning of a new chapter in West Bengal’s political narrative, one led by the BJP‍‍`s promise of "Asol Poriborton" or real change.
