The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a massive labor rally in front of its central office in Nayapaltan, Dhaka, to mark International Workers` Day on May 1. The party`s Chairman and current Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, is scheduled to attend the event as the chief guest. The announcement was made on Thursday evening during a press conference at the BNP central office following a preparatory meeting of the International Workers` Day Celebration Committee. According to reports from the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and local media outlets, the rally is expected to draw a massive crowd of workers and political activists from across the capital and surrounding industrial areas.
Speaking at the press briefing, BNP Standing Committee Member and Political Adviser to the Prime Minister, Nazrul Islam Khan, detailed the upcoming program. He confirmed that the rally is being organized by the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, the labor wing of the BNP. The event will be presided over by the Sramik Dal President, Anwar Hossain. Furthermore, BNP Secretary General and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, will grace the occasion as a special guest. Several other high-ranking officials from both the BNP and the Sramik Dal will also address the gathering.
While urging working-class people and party loyalists to join the rally in large numbers, Nazrul Islam Khan highlighted the ongoing struggles of the labor force in Bangladesh. He pointed out that critical demands, such as fair and livable wages, comprehensive workplace health and safety measures, and overall job security, remain unresolved for many workers. Khan emphasized that although the BNP has formed the government, the Sramik Dal will continue its advocacy and movement to ensure these fundamental rights are fully realized. He frankly admitted that the current administration needs to take more proactive initiatives to secure equitable rights for the working class. The veteran politician expressed his strong expectation that the commitments made to the labor force in the party`s election manifesto will be implemented swiftly.
Addressing the government`s recent performance, Khan highlighted several positive steps that have already been taken to alleviate the economic burdens on the lower-income demographics. He noted that significant initiatives have been rolled out for agricultural laborers and marginalized farmers, most notably the waiving of agricultural loans up to 10,000 Taka. In addition to this, he mentioned the ongoing efforts to amend the existing labor laws to make them more worker-friendly. However, Khan acknowledged that further amendments are necessary to align the country`s labor regulations with international standards, assuring that the government remains open to continuous dialogue on the matter.
In a philosophical reflection on the value of labor, Nazrul Islam Khan described the working class as the core producing force of the nation. He stated that the contribution of workers is deeply embedded in every sphere of society and national development. Therefore, he argued, laborers deserve profound respect and dignity, not mere sympathy from the upper classes. Urging everyone to unite to make the May Day rally a resounding success, the BNP policymaker reiterated that this historic day will play a crucial role in advancing the cause of workers` rights in Bangladesh.
The preparatory meeting and the subsequent press conference were attended by several other key political figures. Among them were BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and the Chief Coordinator of the Sramik Dal, Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas. Various other leaders and activists from different tiers of the Sramik Dal were also present, expressing their united commitment to ensuring the upcoming May Day assembly is both peaceful and highly impactful.
