Barcelona’s 18-year-old rising star Lamine Yamal has been crowned the La Liga Player of the Season for the 2025-26 campaign. The young winger secured the prestigious individual honor following a combined vote from fans, club captains, and football experts. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Yamal’s career, as he outperformed Real Madrid’s French superstar Kylian Mbappe in the final rankings. Yamal’s performance was a cornerstone of Barcelona’s campaign, helping the club secure their 29th league title with 94 points.

Despite missing several crucial fixtures, including the final six league games due to groin and hamstring injuries, Yamal’s impact was undeniable. He made 28 appearances throughout the season, finding the back of the net 16 times while providing 12 assists for his teammates. Barcelona finished the season eight points ahead of rivals Real Madrid, maintaining a strong grasp on the league trophy. This marks the second consecutive year that the Player of the Season award has remained within the Barcelona dressing room, following Raphinha’s success last year.

For Kylian Mbappe, the night was one of mixed emotions. While he successfully claimed the Pichichi award as the league’s top scorer with 25 goals, losing out on the overall Player of the Season trophy to Yamal was a notable setback. Other contenders, such as Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi, Villarreal’s Nicolas Pepe, and Real Betis’ Pablo Fornals, were unable to match the voting support garnered by the Barcelona forward.

Yamal had faced significant concerns regarding his fitness following a hamstring injury sustained against Celta Vigo in late April. There were fears that he might miss the 2026 World Cup, but Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has kept faith in the youngster by including him in the final World Cup squad. The coaching staff has provided assurances that Yamal will be fully match-fit before Spain opens their tournament against Cape Verde on June 15.

The awards ceremony also celebrated the success of Barcelona’s leadership, with manager Hansi Flick receiving the Coach of the Season award for leading the team to the title in his debut year. Real Madrid fans, however, found a highlight in the Goal of the Season category, which was won by Turkish sensation Arda Guler. His spectacular strike from midfield against Elche was recognized as the finest goal of the campaign. The 2025-26 season has firmly established that the next generation of talent is ready to define the future of Spanish football.
