The anticipation for the 2026 World Cup has transcended the football pitch, reaching the Guadalajara Zoo in Mexico. Following the legacy of Paul the Octopus, who captured global attention during the 2010 tournament, animals are once again grabbing headlines with their symbolic predictions. Instead of aquatic creatures, this time the spotlight is on elephants, gorillas, and other wildlife as they engage in a playful forecast of the upcoming World Cup matches.

The Guadalajara Zoo has organized a unique prediction event to mark the start of the tournament. With the opening match between hosts Mexico and South Africa scheduled for June 11, zoo authorities created a mock football pitch to determine which team the animals might favor. The setup involves placing national flags on opposite sides of the enclosure with feed scattered beneath them to entice the participants.

During the test run, two elephants were released onto the mock pitch. After wandering for a few moments, the elephants approached the Mexico flag and began to graze, signaling their choice. The audience present cheered as the animals made their selection, interpreting the act as a favorable prediction for the host nation. While the results are purely for entertainment, the spectacle has successfully amplified the festive spirit surrounding the tournament.

Zoo keeper Ivan Reynoso explained that the primary goal behind this initiative is not just entertainment but also mental stimulation for the animals. He noted that such activities serve as a form of environmental enrichment, helping to enhance the sensory and behavioral activity of the animals in their care. This type of engagement is vital for maintaining the well-being of the residents at the zoo by introducing variety into their daily routines.

The list of predictors expanded to include other species as well. Two gorillas named Chenchi and Faustina were presented with pinatas shaped like the jerseys of Spain and Uruguay. The gorillas chose their preferred team through their interaction with the pinatas. Similarly, a puma named Muluk selected South Korea over the Czech Republic, and a group of six giraffes sided with the Democratic Republic of Congo in their symbolic pick. For the zoo management, these events provide both the animals and the visitors with a unique and engaging experience. As the countdown to the World Cup continues, this unconventional prediction game has added an extra layer of excitement to the football fever gripping the region.
